Validation is an important part of any publisher’s workflow. It prevents broken or flawed content from moving forward undetected. And it helps reduce the amount of manual intervention and QA required by the workflow process. But identifying errors and halting erroneous content is only half of the story. After all, once the error is identified, it still needs to be fixed.
The Importance of Clear, Human-Readable Error Reporting
Not all error read outs are created equal. Being able to quickly find, identify and understand errors can be the difference between a two minute fix and a three hour fix. That means your error reporting needs to be able to explain what the error is. It needs to be able to show where in the content the error is occurring. And it needs to show what the error actually looks like.
When these elements are combined, correcting the error is as simple as locating the line where it occurs, locating the character or item that is out of place or missing, correcting it, and resubmitting. But if even one of these elements is missing, the diagnostic process can quickly devolve into combing through line after line. Comparing tags to try and identify what is different about the flagged line. Or just not understanding why something isn’t working.
